Taj Mahal Taj
Mahal means "Crown Palace" located at Agra in Uttar Pradesh, the Taj
Mahal is one of the most splendid masterpieces of architecture in the
world. The Taj Mahal is one of the universally admired masterpieces of
the world's heritage and the jewel of Muslim art in India. It was
Emperor Shah Jehan who ordered the building of the Taj Mahal, in honor
of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. One of the greatest monuments of
India has been listed amongst the eight wonders of the world. This
monument was built in the name of love and devotion. The most expensive
white marble was brought to Agra. The structure combines ingredients of
Persian, India, Islamic and Turkish styles of architecture. It took
twenty-two years to complete the construction of this architectural
wonder. As per the records twenty thousand people were employed to work
on this magnanimous project, which cost the Mughal emperor thirty-two
million Rupees. In 1983, this grand monument was announced by UNESCO to
be one amongst the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Goa Goa
is situated on the western coast of the Indian peninsula. Goa is one of

Golden Temple The Golden
Temple or Darbar Sahib, situated in Amritsar, Punjab, is the most sacred
temple for Sikhs. It is a symbol of the magnificence and strength of
the Sikh people all over the world. Most visitors to the Golden Temple,
whether Sikh or not, are humbled by what is quite simply the most
tangibly spiritual place in the country. It is one of the major
pilgrimage spots for Sikhs and is also referred as Harminder Sahib. The
Golden Temple is the holy place of both beauty and peacefulness. The
temple from all the sides is bordered by a mesmerising lake that adds to
the overall beauty of the temple. Since ages the temple premise has
been one of the meditation spots for many sages and mendicants. Some
four centuries ago, the Sikh Gurus initiated the construction of the
Golden Temple. This initial process was done by Guru Ram Das and Guru
Amar Das. The final construction job was commenced by Guru Arjan Dev.
The Golden Temple has four entrances called deoris, which opens in all
the four directions symbolizing the temple to be open for all caste,
creed and religion.
India Gate India Gate, an important
monument of the city, is a memorial built in commemoration of more than
80,000 Indian soldiers who were killed during World War I. The monument
is an imposing 42 meters high arch and was designed by the famous
architect Edwin Lutyens. Names of over 70,000 Indian soldiers are
inscribed on the walls of the monument in whose memory it is built. At
the base of the India gate there is another memorial, the Amar Jawan
Jyoti that was added after independence. This eternal flame was lighted
in commemoration of the unknown soldiers who laid their lives to serve
this nation. Near the flame, a shining rifle with a helmet on it, is
placed on a high pedestal, as a tribute to the soldiers who sacrificed
their lives in battle. The best time to visit India Gate is after
sunset, when the structure is floodlit and the atmosphere becomes
pleasant. Fountains located nearby are also illuminated with colored
lights to add further resplendence to the ambience.Every year on 26th
January India gate stands witness to the Republic Day parade where
latest advancements of defence technology is displayed.
Sun Temple The
Sun Temple of Konark, often called as the Black Pagoda, was constructed
in the mid thirteenth century. The Konark Sun Temple (also spelled
Konarak) is a 13th-century Hindu temple dedicated to the sun god. Shaped
like a giant chariot, the temple is known for the exquisite stone
carvings that cover the entire structure. The Konark Sun Temple is the
most popular tourist destination in Orissa and has been a World Heritage
Site since 1984. It is located in the village of Konark, which is 35km
north of Puri on the coast of the Bay of Bengal. The crowing glory of
the temple architecture of Orissa, the Sun Temple at Konark, plays host
to the annual dance festival featuring Odissi and other traditional
dance forms. The open air stage against the backdrop of the floodlit
temple reverberates with the beats of classical ragas and thalas to
transport the audience in sheer ecstasy.
Elephanta Caves Located
about 10 kms from the Gateway of India or 9 nautical miles into the
sea, are the famous Elephanta Caves, which are a great tourist
attraction. The entire cave temple complex covers an area of about
60,000 square feet and it consists of a main chamber and two lateral
ones, courtyards and several subsidiary shrines. There are regular
excursions to these caves every day from the Gateway of India. Though
the entire complex has a number of things to see, one of the main sights
here is the Maheshamurti cave in which Lord Shiva is shown as a
creator, protector and destroyer and should not be missed. One also must
see the southern wall, which has sculptures of Kalyanasundara,
Gangadhara, Ardhanariswara and Uma Maheswara.
